Despite of wasting the paper, we just recently received an email from AT & T that we owe them four cents after we had closed the accounts. I thought it was funny. The fun part would be watching the representative's face when my husband hands the copy of an email stating that we owe them four cents and give them a full of four pennies in person. It would be weird if they have rejected and required us to write a check for four cents.

I am astounded at this: I have called AT&T and Apple. They seem awefully unsure about really what to do.
I appreciate your suggestions. So if I have roaming turned off I can still make and receive calls but will not be charged the $1.99/min romaing charge?
I will only be charged for the calls I make and whatever flatrate I have?

This leads me to what exactly the roaming feature is:
In the iPhone guide roaming is a feature that allows internet and visual voicemail over a cellular network WHEN YOU'RE IN AN AREA NOT COVERED BY YOUR CARRIER'S NETWORK.
So I gather it is a way to get a dump of emails and voicemail when out of normal carrier's network.
I am going to Europe in a few days and I'm a bit nervous as well. I called ATT a few days ago before seeing this post. ATT decided I should turn on International roaming. I said OK. ATT were not sure what this does but they thought it a good idea to turn it on nonetheless (?)

In 1.1.3, Settings/Network allows you to turn Data Roaming off.
The Apple/ATT message says "When abroad, turning off Data Roaming may avoid roaming charges when using email, web browsing and other data services" I'd also like to know
an example of someone's iPhone experience and charges in Europe as we're planning a
2 month trip to the UK & Scandinavia next month.

Interesting, my Macbook Pro scored a 4.8. I'm guessing there are perhaps some slight differences in the configuration of the two machines.

I've configured my machine exactly as you've described and use Vista 99.9% of the time for work. In fact, the other day I booted to OS X to makes sure it was up-to-date and after downloading and starting the install of the updates I can no longer boot OS X, it just hangs on the Apple logo. .

If you get your iPhone unlocked then you'd be able to receive free voice calls and texts in Italy, get calls within Italy and back to the US for only 69 cents, and outgoing texts for only 40 cents! Might as well save a packet and enjoy the trip more, instead of paying it to your US provider. All you have to do is purchase a Global SIM from www.gosim.com for $57.99 (comes with $10 preloaded airtime) and free shipping. In all it will work in 140+ countries with a single mobile number and the airtime balance never expires, so it will be useful for future trips over the years too. Hope that helps.

I agree, the developers have access to the Android SDK more so than the iPhone SDK, BUT

1.) It should just be mostly Cocoa. Writing apps for it should be similar to writing OS X apps, and there's already a huge, knowledgeable willing, installed developer base.

2.) No Android devices will be shipping until the middle of 2008, at the earliest. By that time the iPhone, will which already have a huge installed user base, will be a far more appealing developing platform. While Android may have more apps when the iPhone SDK launches, the iPhone will have more users, and in the end, that's what pays the developers.

But a thoughtful piece nonetheless. As an iPhone owner, I've been very impressed with the Android alliance's ambition, and I suspect that Apple's is going to carry with it some unappealing caveat, something that hamstrings it in a way that doesn't promote the openness of the Android platform. I still think it'll be competitive, and I certainly don't think we're at the point of declaring the war won by either side.
